Chapter 17
"The Prince That Shall Come"
And the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.... And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease (Daniel 9:26,27).
And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy... the mighty and the holy people... And through... peace shall [he] destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand (Daniel 8:24,25).
Precisely 70 weeks of years, beginning Nisan 1, 445 b.c., must roll by to fulfill all that has been foretold by the prophets concerning Israel and Jerusalem. Of course, we are long past a.d. 39 when that period of 490 years of 360 days each should have ended. We know that 69 of these weeks of years (483 years) went exactly according to schedule and ended in a.d. 32. Daniel clearly stated that at that precise time Messiah would come, but instead of reigning He would be slain. And so it happened.
As foretold, the 69 weeks of years were climaxed by Christ being hailed as "the Messiah the Prince"—then four days later being denied His kingdom, mocked with a crown of thorns, and crucified. Thereafter Jerusalem and the temple were to be destroyed once again, this time by the people of the Antichrist, "the prince that shall come." That prophecy also was fulfilled exactly as Daniel declared it. But what of the other prophecies? What happened to the last week?
The climax of these 70 weeks is described by Daniel as "to make an end of sins... to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy" (9:24). That would include, of course, the Messiah reigning as King of kings over His worldwide millennial kingdom from His father David's throne. That seat of authority is in the City of David where God has chosen to place His name (Deuteronomy 12:11,21, etc.; 1 Kings 11:36; 14:21, etc.). Fulfilled at last would be the promises which God had repeatedly made to His ancient chosen people, Israel, through His prophets.
That Christ is not yet physically present and reigning in Jerusalem as promised—that He isn't even reigning there and over this world invisibly—is obvious. There are those who suggest that He is reigning from heaven now and that in this way the promise to Israel has been fulfilled. One need hardly argue that Christ is not in control of this world as the Scriptures promise He will be one day. The daily news attests to that fact, as does our everyday experience. We are, quite obviously, not yet in the millennium, in spite of the claims of the post-millennialists.
It is certain that the 70 weeks could not have expired without the promises all being fulfilled. God would be proved a liar if that were the case. Something has caused a delay. If those weeks had
